RRB ALP Eligibility Criteria 2024
(A.) Candidates applying for the position must have completed Matriculation/SSLC along with ITI from recognized institutions of NCVT/SCVT in any of the following trades: Fitter, Electrician, Instrument Mechanic, Millwright/Maintenance Mechanic, Mechanic (Radio & TV), Electronics Mechanic, Mechanic (Motor Vehicle), Wireman, Tractor Mechanic, Armature & Coil Winder, Mechanic (Diesel), Heat Engine, Turner, Machinist, and Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning Mechanic. Matriculation/SSLC, coupled with the fulfillment of Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in the mentioned trades, is a prerequisite. Â (OR)
(B.) Matriculation/SSLC and a three-year Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or Automobile Engineering are necessary qualifications. (OR)
Instead of ITI, a mix of different streams within these Engineering disciplines from a recognized Institution is acceptable.

Interested and eligible candidates can apply for the Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) position in all notified Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs), offering a total of 5696 vacancies in pay level-2. The application deadline is February 19, 2024. RRB ALP Selection Process 2024
The recruitment process shall comprise of the following stages:
- First Stage CBT (CBT-1)
- Second Stage CBT (CBT-2)
- Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)
- Document Verification (DV) and
- Medical Examination (ME)
Candidates for the Second Stage Computer-Based Test (CBT) will be shortlisted on an RRB-specific basis, with the ratio set at 15 times the number of vacancies for that particular RRB. This ratio may be adjusted based on the Railway Administration’s requirements. The selection will be merit-based on their performance in CBT-1, and marks normalization will be applied across all stages involving multiple shifts. Shortlisted candidates for CBT-2 will receive notifications on official RRB websites, and they will also be informed via SMS and email (sent to their registered mobile number and email ID) to download their E-call letters for the CBT-2 examination.
RRB ALP Syllabus and Exam Scheme 2024
First Stage CBT (CBT-1)
CBT-1 will only be a screening exam for shortlisting eligible candidates for CBT-2 based on their normalized marks and merit.
- Duration: 60 minutes
- Number of questions: 75, Maximum marks: 75 (@1 mark per question)
- There shall be negative marking @1/3rd marks for each wrong answer.
- Normalization of marks will be done for CBTs held in multiple shifts.
- Minimum pass percentage for eligibility: UR & EWS – 40%, OBC (NCL) – 30%, SC-30%, ST- 25%.
- The standard of questions in CBT-1 will generally match the educational standards and/or minimum technical qualifications mandated for the post. The questions will be of an objective type with multiple-choice answers, spanning subjects like Mathematics, Mental Ability, General Science, and General Awareness.
Second Stage CBT (CBT-2)
Shortlisting of candidates for CBT-2 shall be done RRB-wise and community wise as per their normalized marks and merit in CBT-1.
Total number of candidates to be shortlisted for CBT-2 shall be limited to 15 times the number of vacancies notified against each RRB.
- CBT-2 shall comprise of two parts viz., Part-A and Part-B as detailed below.
- Total Duration: 2 hours and 30 minutes & Total Questions: 175
- Part-A: 90 minutes & 100 questions
- Part-B: 60 minutes & 75 questions
- There shall be negative marking @1/3rd marks for each wrong answer.
- Normalization of marks will be done for CBTs held in multiple shifts.
- In Part -A, Minimum pass percentage for eligibility: UR & EWS-40%, OBC (NCL) – 30%, SC- 30%, ST-25%.
- Only the marks scored in Part-A shall be counted for shortlisting of candidates for further stages of this recruitment process provided the candidate irrespective of community is able to secure qualifying marks (35%) in Part-B.
- SYLLABUS for Part-A: a. Mathematics, b. General Intelligence and Reasoning, c. Basic Science and Engineering.
- SYLLABUS for Part-B: Part-B is only a qualifying test in nature and shall have questions from the various trade syllabi as prescribed by Directorate General of Training (DGT).
RRB ALP Medium of Examination 2024
In both CBT-1 and CBT-2, questions will be accessible in English, Hindi, and 13 regional Indian languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Candidates need to indicate their examination medium from the provided options in the online application form. Questions in CBT-1 and CBT-2 will be displayed in the chosen language and English, while CBAT will be conducted exclusively in English and Hindi.
RRB Assistant Loco Pilot Document Verification 2024
- The selection for Document Verification will be based on candidates’ marks and merit in Part-A of CBT-2, successful completion of Part-B of CBT-2, and performance in CBAT. The number of shortlisted candidates will be equivalent to the number of vacancies.
- When two or more candidates obtain identical marks, their merit position will be established using age criteria. The candidate who is older will be ranked higher than the younger candidate.
- The selected candidates’ appointment is conditional upon their satisfactory performance in the requisite Medical Fitness Test conducted by the Railway Administration and the conclusive verification of all essential documents, including an evaluation of the candidates’ antecedents/character.
- Candidates are advised to take note that RRBs are responsible for recommending the names of empanelled candidates to the concerned Railway Zone. The issuance of appointment offers is solely the prerogative of the respective Railway Zones.
- In the event of any insufficiency in empanelment or other unforeseen situations, RRBs maintain the right to utilize candidates lower in the merit list if required, considering their merit and preferences. It is essential to understand that such a provision does not establish a guaranteed right for these candidates to be considered for appointment.
